"In interior design or installation, we often hear about different models of LED tubes, with T5 and T8 being the most common. What exactly are the differences between T5 and T8 tubes? And how do we choose the right model for a project? Let's explain the differences between T5 and T8 tubes from four aspects: size, luminous intensity, energy consumption, and environmental friendliness!

Differences between T5 and T8 Tubes

1/ Size Differences between T5 and T8 LED Tubes

The "T" in T8 and T5 tubes stands for "Tube," indicating a tubular shape. The number after the T indicates the diameter of the tube.

This means that each "T" is 1/8 inch, and one inch equals 25.4 mm." Therefore, each "T" represents 25.4 ÷ 8 = 3.175 mm. The diameter of a T8 LED tube is approximately 25.4 mm, while the diameter of a T5 LED tube is smaller, approximately 15.8 mm.

When purchasing, you can choose the model according to the size of your home's light fixtures. Larger fixtures can choose T8, and smaller fixtures can choose T5. It's best to record the required light fixture dimensions before purchasing. You can choose a T5 LED tube even if you want a T8 tube, but you'll need an adapter bracket.

2/ Luminous Intensity of T5 and T8 LED Tubes

In terms of luminous intensity, the T8 tube is brighter because the T5 tube is smaller, so it contains fewer electrons and gases, resulting in less brightness when powered. Therefore, the T8 tube is brighter.

If a brighter light source is needed for a given application and location, a T8 light tube is recommended; if a dimmer light source is required, a T5 light tube is preferable.

3/ Energy Consumption of T5 and T8 LED Light Tubes

Regarding energy consumption, T5 LED light tubes use rare-earth tri-color phosphors, making them more energy-efficient than T8 light tubes.

This is related to the size of the light tube itself. Because T5 tubes are smaller, the probability of gas contacting the tube wall and discharging is higher. Therefore, for the same lighting time, T5 tubes require less electricity. T5 light tubes save more than 40% energy per unit time compared to T8 tubes. If you want better energy efficiency, it is recommended to choose T5 light tubes.

4/ Environmental Friendliness of T5 and T8 LED Light Tubes

In terms of environmental friendliness, T5 light tubes utilize a new technology—rare-earth tri-color phosphors—resulting in a lower loss rate. Comparing the lifespan of T8 and T5 LED tubes, T5 tubes have a longer lifespan. Therefore, T5 tubes are more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly than T8 tubes.

How to choose the right LED tube?

When choosing LED tubes, we can consider the installation location, the required luminous intensity, and the desired color temperature.

Because T5 tubes are smaller, they produce less brightness when powered on, making T8 tubes relatively brighter. If you need a brighter tube, choose T8; if you need a dimmer tube, choose T5. T8 and T5 tubes also differ in their applications and locations. T8 tubes are generally used in larger spaces such as public spaces, factories, and hospitals, while T5 tubes are more commonly used in home decoration. Furthermore, in practical use, thinner tubes are easier to conceal and offer more flexibility in application, which is why T5 tubes are favored by designers.

Color temperature is also a selection factor. Different color temperatures evoke different emotional responses, so different venues choose fluorescent tubes based on color temperature.

Color temperature is expressed in Kelvin (K) and is divided into three categories:

A/ Warm Light: Warm light has a color temperature below 3300K and is similar to incandescent light.

Warm light has a higher red component, giving people a feeling of warmth, health, and comfort. It is suitable for homes, residences, dormitories, hospitals, hotels, or places with relatively low temperatures.

B/ Warm White Light: Also known as neutral light, its color temperature is between 3300K and 5300K.

Warm white light is soft, giving people a peaceful, comfortable, and pleasant feeling. It is suitable for hospitals, restaurants, offices, shops, and other similar places.

C/ Cool Light: Also known as daylight light, its color temperature is above 5300K.

Cool-colored light sources are closer to natural light, giving a bright feeling and making it easier for people to concentrate. They are more suitable for classrooms, design studios, conference rooms, offices, drawing rooms, library reading rooms, and exhibition windows.

T5 fluorescent tubes are energy-saving, with a luminous intensity closer to daylight; while T8 fluorescent tubes are older-style fluorescent lamps, with a luminous intensity closer to warm-colored light. Therefore, when choosing lighting fixtures, one should consider four aspects: size, luminous intensity, energy consumption, and environmental friendliness, and then combine this with the required luminous intensity and color temperature for each installation location to determine which type of fluorescent tube to use.
